Discover the Meaning of Lifelong Learning
“Because life is about keeping a curious mind and learning new things”
Over the past few years, you’ve likely heard the term “lifelong learning” used by people around you. This is because the business landscape today is completely different from the past and continues to change. Those in the workforce, or people in general, can no longer rely on their prior knowledge and expertise to stay relevant at work.
So, the question is: what is “lifelong learning”?
It is an approach to life in which you keep an open mind to learn new things beyond the realm of studying, including areas such as self-development, the importance of family, contribution to your organization, as well as active listening and getting feedback. Receptiveness is the key to lifelong learning.
The world moves too fast for the traditional education system to keep pace with change. The concept of lifelong learning enables people to pursue self-development and put them in the best position to succeed.
“Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.”
These words from Mahatma Gandhi confirm the importance of lifelong learning. Learning is a continuous process and has a great impact on the future and success of each individual.
Benjamin Franklin, one of the leading figures of early American history, also saw the importance of lifelong learning.
“An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.”
Henry Ford, the founder of Ford Motor Company, shared a similar view.
“Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at twenty or eighty. Anyone who keeps learning stays young.”
In the eyes of Henry Ford, once we stop learning, we deprive ourselves of the exposure to new experiences. As time passes, we fall behind and lose touch with the world. In other words, learning keeps us open and ready for change. For this reason, the lifelong learning mindset should be adopted by everyone.
Education is a lifelong process for a person, as His Majesty King Rama IV opined in a royal address on 20 April 1978, at one of the countless graduation ceremonies he presided over:
“Education concerns everyone, and not for a particular period, as a direct duty for a period. It is not so. Growing up, one has to learn, up to higher education, as you are pursuing. Higher education means a complete and high level of knowledge. That said once you go on to work, you will still need to continue learning. Otherwise, you will not be able to survive. Even with a doctorate degree, you will need to keep learning. This means that learning never ends.”
Even after we’ve completed our university degree, we cannot afford to stop seeking new knowledge because learning should never cease.
Given what we now know, we can appreciate the meaning and understand the importance of lifelong learning.
