Discover the meaning of lifelong learning
“Because life is about keeping a curious mind and learning new things”
In the past few years, we’d likely have heard the term “lifelong learning from people around us. This is because the business landscape today is completely different from the past. Those of us in the workforce or people in general can no longer rely on their knowledge and expertise to stay relevant at work or improve themselves.
So the question is, what is lifelong learning? An easy explanation would be an approach to life where you keep an open mind to keep on learning new things beyond the realm of studying. By keeping your mind and eyes open for self-development, the importance of family, contribution to your organization, as well as active listening and feedback, you’re opening up your world for the gift of lifelong learning.
The world moves too fast for the traditional education system to bridge to gap, this is where Lifelong Learning comes into the picture to enable people to rely on self-development now more than ever.
“Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.”
These are the words of Mahatma Gandhi confirms the importance of lifelong learning. Learning is a continuous process despite your way of learning and it has a great impact on the future and success of each individual.
Benjamin Franklin, one of the leading figures of early American history, also saw the importance of lifelong learning.
“An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.”
Henry Ford, the founder of Ford Motor Company, shared a similar view.
“Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at twenty or eighty. Anyone who keeps learning stays young.”
In the eyes of Henry Ford, once we stop learning, we deprive ourselves of the exposure to new experiences. As time passes, we fall behind and lose touch with the world. In reverse, learning keeps us open and ready for change, like being forever young. For this reason, lifelong learning should be adopted by everyone.
Education is a lifelong process for a person, as His Majesty King Rama IV stated in a royal address on 20 April 1978, at one of the countless graduation ceremonies he presided over:
“Education concerns everyone, and not for a particular period, as a direct duty for a period. It is not so. Growing up, one has to learn, up to higher education, as you are pursuing. Higher education means a complete and high level of knowledge. That said once you go on to work, you will still need to continue learning. Otherwise, you will not be able to survive. Even with a doctorate degree, you will need to keep learning. This means that learning never ends.”
Even after we’ve completed our university degree, we cannot afford to stop seeking new knowledge because learning should never end.
Given we now know, we can appreciate the meaning and understand the importance of lifelong learning.
“Knowledge creates opportunity and future.”
This perfectly sums up what we’ve discussed about lifelong learning. It’s a process that continues for as long as we live.
Because knowledge is our path towards the success and future we strive to achieve.
